Melbourne Day 1

The fifteen hour flight that we had been somewhat dreading, turned out to be very nice overall. The seats were not too cramped, the flight crew was very pleasant and the food wasn’t bad. We figure we got about five hours sleep. The only problem was that it was cold in the cabin and that kept me from getting more sleep than I might have.

Although our tour doesn’t start until tomorrow night, after clearing customs we were met at the airport by Tauck and transported to our hotel. We actually met two other couples on the plane (standing in line for the bathroom). Our fellow travelers seem very nice and I think we’ll have a lot of fun. We seem equally divided between East Coast and West Coast.

We got to the hotel at about 1:00 p.m. and set out to explore Melborne. We had a delicious lunch of Pasties (pastry filled with mushrooms and goat cheese) and a salad. We walked for another couple of hours and got a feel for the city. It is clean and quite cosmopolitan. We found a Starbucks, so all is good. We’ll do more touring tomorrow and on Tuesday with the group. It is very warm–90 degrees. It is now 5:00 p.m. And we are ready for a shower, a little rest and a light dinner.

Tomorrow is Australia’s Labor Day and we are told that there will be a colorful parade and lots of festivities. Stay tuned!

  1. So happy your flight went well. We also saw a parade in Melbourne. Think it was Australia Day. It was also very hot, but the parade was very colorful, the people were delightful and we ended up in a park afterwards where they had food stands and we saw an aboriginal show. So glad things are starting so well for you. Love, Doris

You are hearty souls! What airline did you fly? (I ‘M guessing not United.)
