After pausing yesterday to observe Yom Kippur, we were up early this morning to begin some serious touring and photo taking.  We’re still experiencing some jet lag; wide-eyed and ready to go at 4:00 a.m. We were picked up at 10:00 by our guide, Perry, for a day trip to Stellenbosch, South Africa’s wine country.

Perry was a wonderful guide. He enlightened us on the history of South Africa and the Cape Town area throughout the day. There is still a great deal of poverty in this country. We passed large shanty towns where the people live in crowded tiny shacks made of corrogated metal, packed one on top of the other. That was very troublesome, but we are told that the government is tearing them down and building new housing which they give to the poor at no charge.  You can click on the pictures to make them larger.

We visited four winerys, all of which were very beautiful. At each we sat outside on the deck and tasted the wines, looking out at the vineyards and the mountains. We had a delicious lunch at a winery called Delaire Graff and came across a festival in progress at a winery called Boschendal. We also stopped and walked around the very picturesque town of Stellenbosch. Here are some more photos from our most enjoyable day!
