Rhine River Cruise and Israel-Day 5

If you are reading this post on FB please click on the link to see the entire post and accompanying photos.

We sailed again during the night and were docked in the German town of Speyer this morning. We had two choices of tours, Heidleburg and the Technik Museum and Speyer.

We opted to go to Speyer because I had visited Heidleburg before and Clifford was interested in the museum. Ellen and Neal went to Heidleberg and we shared experiences over lunch.

The museum was a lot of fun. They had fantastic old cars and trains, ,  military planes, and an aerospace section. We climbed many stairs to go inside of a 747. We could have gone down the slide, but opted not to.

We then drove a short distance into the town of Speyer, which is a UNESCO  World Heritage Site.  We visited the cathedral and I went down into the crypt, where kings and emperors are buried.

We had only about one half hour to see more of the town. We had been told that there was a mikvah (Jewish ritual bath) that we should try to see. It turns out that these are the ruins of a medieval synagogue from the twelfth and thirteenth century. We didn’t have time to climb all the way down to the mikvah as it is about 33 feet below the ground, but I was able to go down a couple of flights of stairs.

I am going to do a second post today because we just finished cruising through the Rhine River Valley and the scenery was so spectacular that it deserves it’s own post!
