In response to The Daily Post Weekly Photo Challenge Heritage. This past week I visited Angel Island, in the San Francisco Bay, where immigrants entering the U.S. between 1910 and 1940 were detained and interrogated. Many of the immigrants, particularly the Chinese, were not welcomed to the United States and were not treated well. The goal was to deport as many of them as possible. This is an ugly part of our heritage and I believe that we must not allow it to be repeated.
This picture shows Chinese characters carved into the wall, probably a poem written by one of the detainees.

So many of us don’t learn the lessons the past tells and this is perilous for all of us.

A shameful time, indeed, and your post is a reminder that we cannot let history repeat itself. Thanks, Susan.

Nice. The US has a past of intolerance towards immigrants – there were several immigration acts in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that were aimed at specific immigrants. We also had an opportunity to allow refugees to leave Europe before WWII and our immigration policies kept many Jewish immigrants out. We like to believe we live up to Emma Lazarus’ poem, but often we fall short. Nice post, thoughtful. Thanks for helping me think on a Sunday morning.

The poem was indeed written by a detainee who was detained for over 30 days. He was relieved to be freed ultimately.
Apart from the Indians, all Americans are immigrants ( or descendants thereof ). No one has more authority over the others to exclude anybody just based on their race.
Some people would make the biggest efforts to be in the US just to persuade their American dreams. In my view, this diversity has made the US great!
