Rare Blooming Queen of the Night

Last night I was invited by my friend, Mary Ann to photograph her Epiphyllum oxypetalum, Queen of the Night, in bloom! The plant is also known as night-blooming cereus. Each bloom on this cactus species is only open for one night; it closes the next morning, never to open again!

When Mary Ann texted me at about 8:30 p.m. that several blooms were opening Clifford and I hopped in the car and drove to Mary Ann’s house. Clifford, Mary Ann and her husband all helped with lighting.

There were three blooms last night and they were stunning. They also have a lovely, sweet scent.
In the film “Crazy Rich Asians,” the Singapore family hosts a viewing party for their Queen of the Night! You might remember it!

  1. Thrilling! What a treat to view and great capture. Beautiful lighting. We have an ordinary hot pink version that blooms randomly during the year and stays a little longer.
