On our trip to Israel in 2016 we rode the tram to the top of the ancient fortress at Masada, where rebel Judeans took a stand against the Romans in the year 73 A.D. They held out, but ultimately were not successful and many, including women and children, jumped to their death rather than becoming Roman slaves.
